The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is mandating the use of detectable warning systems in all new construction and/or alterations to support people with disabilities. The ADA access board had guidelines on accessibility for public right-of-ways in 1991 which addressed the use of detectable warning systems also known as truncated domes. The board suspended its requirement for detectable warning devices based on concerns about the specifications regarding where pedestrian right-of-ways cross with vehicular traffic.
In July of 2001 the suspension was lifted after guidelines were revised. Detectable warning systems, or truncated domes, are now the standard at areas where sidewalk meets vehicular traffic ways.
